As of October 1987 The Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum is recognized as exempt from federal income tax. The organization is currently exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donors may deduct contributions to the organization as provided in section 170 of the code.
The Board of Trustees of the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum have bimonthly meetings held in February, April, June, August, October and December. The date, place, and agenda are announced on the home page of the Friends website and in the Monday Morning Line emailed to volunteers.
According to Article 4, Section 8, the Secretary of the Board is responsible for keeping the minutes of each Board meeting. This includes Executive Committee's written report of activities and actions, committee reports, and other business deemed for inclusion in the Board minutes and ratified by the Board of Trustees. The Board meetings are open to all Friends as are copies of the Board minutes.

The Board of Trustees has established a By-Laws Revision Committee whose charge is to collect all changes proposed, debate them, vote on a recommendation to make or reject each change and pass them all on to the Board with those recommendations.
